Ryan Tadhope is ready to speak.

Now that the visual effects for Top Gun: Maverick have been nominated for an Oscar and the team behind them can no longer show off their incredible work, visual effects supervisor Touhope finally reveals how the team got the basis for the invisible effects, but more importantly. : 2400 kg. As announced in the Academy Museum's VFX "competition" last month, Art Professionals Method (now part of Framestore), MPC and LOLA have undertaken a number of works to make the film more realistic. They combined mosaic images with stunning aerial footage and stunts of Tom Cruise flying in the cockpit of a Navy fighter jet. On aerial photographs, the planes look like real ones. Navy pilots filmed six Sony Venice cameras connected to a Rialto camera extension system from the actors in the aircraft they were piloting. The visuals provided dark art, environments, sky changes, and plenty of gunshots and explosions for the final barrage.

While there is a lot of CGI going on in the typical Hollywood tent, more than that calls for an expansion of these handy filming techniques. "We've always tried to create very soft, invisible work that people don't talk about or think about," Tudhop told IndieWire.

“Our approach was to try to use practical moments and try to capture a real aircraft, then use the resources of our fleet to tell the story, and use those objects as a director to tell the story. According to Tadhope, Maverick allowed him to "create visual effects" unmatched in any other film. These are resources and support.

The latest from the 2020s: visual effects. This collaboration between award-winning CSA cinematographer Claudio Miranda (shocked by the academy), naval pilots, flight coordinators and others brought the visuals back to their former glory. "You're trying to be subtle, you're trying to make the images believable," Tudhop said. "You don't want to be in a big movie that you don't want to see, but your chains are in those movies because I think they can bite."

Watch the introductory scene where Todd Hope Maverick (Tom Cruise) pushes the Darkstar experimental aircraft to its limits to demonstrate how the Union uses the visual effects process. The Death Star does not exist in real life: it was made specifically for the film, and the footage of the flight through the cockpit was filmed on the set. “We knew the Maverick would actually walk around with that gimbal, but we still wanted to get rid of it,” as was the case with the F-18 flight actors.

Solution? “Sometimes we place this aircraft behind the Darkstar cockpit to create a cleaner back wall and control the drone from the back seat,” Tudhop said. “The most accurate analogy for this moment in history at this time is the F-18, right? It was the plane we had and it did the same maneuvers at the same speed and speed. We have chosen it. Remove this special back wall. ."

“Honestly, I think we first had to put together a lot of puzzle pieces and figure out how to get the equipment and everything we needed,” he said. "The images in this film speak to what we do outside and inside the computer."

This marriage of the practical and the digital proved more challenging for the visual effects team than the simple decision to digitize all of the images in a publication. This achieves an accuracy that depends on the equipment and the reality of the flight. Throughout production, it was a top-down process with the help of the crew and pilots. One of the added benefits of aerial photography is the exploitation of limitations and imperfections. For example, when the pilots had trouble balancing the frame needed for the plague, they found it in the second frame and the VFX team was able to complete the frame without having to redo it on the computer. There were also wonderful moments of joy. One such moment occurred when the Death Star flew past Ed Harris and crashed into a security booth. His first action was to restore the guardhouse and shoot him. But he did so well that he was fired.

The most widely used CGI in films is tragic explosions, and the highway has become a bowl-shaped valley requiring digital footage, environments and explosions. But it was filmed in Washington's Cascade Range with never-before-seen news and effects, which made the disaster all the more interesting.

“They did all kinds of research,” Tudhop said. "But it's mostly based on this particular location where we shot and worked with the same restrictions as the rest of the movie."

Is there a place for happy occasions? "Yes," said Toodope. That's all we're talking about. On the other hand, if a team of really talented visual effects designers does all the visual effects on the computer, it can be so difficult that you risk spoiling the fun.

“These shots are too perfect, too real and too beautiful to be weightless,” he said. “The application of this technique faces many obstacles. You are trying to catch real plane pilot with real pilot, real pilot, real operator and other real plane with these amazing engineering challenges.
